Kindergarten News!
April 28, 2017

In math we have are learning that it is important to be able to SHOW (on paper) what you were thinking when you solved a story problem!  It can be a tricky thing to do!
Here are some examples...

Two ladies from MidwestOne Bank came to teach us about money
and how important it is to keep it in a safe place and to SAVE money!
We heard a story and played a money counting game.
Some people won a dollar coin!!!
Then we got a delicious "Buck" cupcake.
Buck is the mascot of the bank! The ladies also gave each kindergartner a packet which has a wonderful offer for your child!

In Writers workshop, we continue to write to make the world a better place!

One of our writing lessons this week reminded students that they know so many strategies for figuring out how to spell words!
Students can...
-use the word wall!
-use the room...there are helping charts all over!
-stretch the word slowly over and over!
-remember the letter people helping words!
-listen for little words within the word!
-listen for chunks!

The teachers had Professional Development on Wednesday. They studied the vertical alignment of our writing curriculum.
They also learned about Growth Mindset.
They ended the afternoon by getting a chance to collaborate with their grade level teams. It was a valuable day!  :)

Mrs. Koenen did benchmark testing for her class!
She was testing to see their reading level....she saw big improvements! Mrs. V. will test next week!

Kindergarten News!

In Writers Workshop we have begun persuasive writing.
We learned that writers can make the world a better place. We see a problem, think about how to fix it, and then we write. The kindergartners had many choices!
They could design a poster, write a letter, write a book, write a song or write a list of rules!
Here are some examples of what they did!

We talked about the difference between fact and opinion. A fact is something that is true for everyone. An opinion is something that is true for the person saying it.
In Mrs. V.'s Math group, we played the card game called Garbage!
It is awesome for reinforcing numerical order!!

In Mrs. Koenen's Math group,  we worked on using the number line to help with addition!

We really worked on adding details to a self portraits!
We had to write at least three sentences about ourselves.

We went on an ALPHABET CHALLENGE walk!

We had to find something that begins with each letter!

We decided to stop by our tree while we on the search!
It was showing SURE signs of spring!!

Since Earth Day is on a Saturday...we decided to do a little something for our part of the Earth on Friday
We did a lot of cleaning up around our schools!

More fun pictures from the week!

Abby and Mrs. Cooley participated in a 5K last weekend!
