Kindergarten News!!
January 6, 2017

We Met Mr. Hh this week! He has Happy Hair!

Happy New Year!!
We learned about different ways people celebrate the new year around the world. We learned that a resolution is a firm decision to DO or NOT do something!
We wrote what our New Year’s resolution is for 2017!!
Ask your kindergartner what theirs was!!

We heard a poem by Shel Silverstein called “Hug o’ War.

Then we did a circle activity called “Filling up a Hug.”

We labeled the “Helper”!
We labeled all the body parts that begin with the letter “h.”

We read many books about hands!
In Art, we made a creation using a tracing of our hand!
We filled it up with all kinds of patterns. They are beautiful!

During the next few weeks, in our Math classes,
will be learning and practicing addition of numbers with sums to 10.
Addition is joining groups together!
In Mrs. V.'s group, we colored a setting and then used cubes to show
addition story problems.
The story pictured below was...
Two frogs were swimming in the pond. Two more came and joined them!
How many altogether?
Then the teacher wrote the number sentence 2+2=4 on the white board.

In Mrs. Koenen's group, we made snowmen!
We got to have a snowball for each letter in our LAST NAME.
Then we made a chart to show the information!
Don't you HATE it when that HAPPENS!!  HA HA!

We will not have school on Monday, Jan 16th!
It is a professional development for teachers.

As part of our study of the letter Hh, we talked about healthy habits!
We discussed eating good foods, getting exercise, and getting enough sleep!

We began Readers Workshop this week!
Our first lesson was Readers Read the World!
We took a walk through our classroom AND the school to find words we could figure out!!
READERS HAVE TO THINK!!

The very important reading skill is being able to SEQUENCE. After you read stories with your child, ask them to recall what happened first, next, etc.,…

We are still reading books that are up for the Caldecott award!
We had a guest reader, Mrs. Flanigan!

We read, Franklin and the Hero. After the story we talked about real life heroes…people who make the world a better place by being nice and doing what is right! Then the kindergartners wrote about someone they think is a real life hero!
Ask your child who they wrote about!
Also...check out the Kid President youtube video about being a hero!
It is very inspirational!
“You don’t need a cape! You don’t need money! You just need to CARE!”  :)

Here is the January lunch menu!

Here are some more fun pics from the week!
We had A LOT of indoor recesses!

Mayzie brought a harmonica!

We had a sing-a-long! Here, we are singing
"THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE!"
